• Authorizes Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) pharmacies to accept and redispense unused prescription medications returned by corrections facilities under specified conditions.

• Requires returning corrections facilities to pass routine on-site inspections and maintain a registered or licensed practical nurse responsible for drug security, handling, and administration.

• Pharmacist must verify drugs were properly stored, handled, not opened/used, properly labeled with identity/strength/expiration date/lot number, and dispensed in unit-dose or unit-of-issue packages.

• Mandates pharmacist develop written protocols for accepting, returning to stock, repackaging, labeling, and redispensing drugs, including damage assessment and tracking systems.

• Does not apply to controlled substances, customized patient medication packages, improperly labeled drugs, or drugs not in unit-dose/unit-of-issue packages.
