SB139 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Sections 17-16-2 and 17-16-4 to expand the definition of reimbursable election expenses that the State of Alabama must reimburse to counties for federal and state elections.

• Establishes an Election Expense Reimbursement Committee consisting of 8 members including the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, Director of Finance, and chairs of relevant legislative committees.

• Committee must meet at least 90 days before the June 2012 primary to identify and approve additional election costs beyond those listed in Section 17-16-2 as eligible for reimbursement.

• Comptroller must distribute the approved list of reimbursable expenses to each county commission chair and probate judge at least 60 days before the primary election, with the list remaining in effect for all elections unless amended by the committee.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
