AL SB161

Amends Section 31-5-14 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to change language regarding payment of Department of Veterans' Affairs salaries and expenses from mandatory ("required") to discretionary ("may be paid").

Applies to the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2011, and all subsequent fiscal years.

Salaries and expenses covered include officials, employees, office costs, travel, and other operational expenses for the department and district or county service commissioners' offices.

Maintains the requirement that each county must furnish suitable office space in the county courthouse or other appropriate location and pay for associated maintenance expenses including rent, telephone, utilities, and janitor services.

Takes effect on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
