SB186 Summary

• Amends Section 40-12-244 of the Alabama Code to add exemption from state privilege or license taxes and registration fees for persons retired from the United States Armed Forces or any U.S. Armed Forces reserve organization.

• Exemption applies only to one passenger vehicle per person and extends only to distinctive United States Armed Forces Retired license tags.

• Requires retirees to be Alabama residents at the time the exemption is claimed and must present proper identification and proof of residence on forms prescribed by the Department of Revenue.

• Allows retired military members to obtain additional distinctive license plates for other passenger vehicles they own by paying regular privilege or license tax and registration fees.

• Effective January 1 following passage and approval by the Governor or upon otherwise becoming law.
