SB199 Summary

• Amends Section 11-44G-2 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to exclude Class 7 and 8 municipalities with populations of 12,000 or more from its vacancy procedures.

• Specifies that mayor vacancies in municipalities with 12,000+ inhabitants shall be filled by the city council president pursuant to Section 11-43-42(a) instead of alternative appointment or election procedures.

• Resolves a conflict between two code sections regarding how mayor vacancies are filled in larger Class 7 and 8 municipalities based on population thresholds from the most recent federal decennial census.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or upon otherwise becoming law.
