SB22 Summary

• Amends Section 11-45-9 of the Alabama Code to establish maximum penalties for municipal ordinance violations: fines not exceeding $500 and imprisonment or hard labor not exceeding 6 months, except as otherwise provided.

• Establishes a $5,000 maximum fine and one-year maximum imprisonment or hard labor for violations of traffic-related penalties prescribed in Section 32-5A-191.

• Sets a $1,000 maximum fine for 12 specific misdemeanor offenses when adopted as municipal ordinance violations, including criminal mischief, theft offenses, property damage, food stamp fraud, and intellectual property violations.

• Limits corporate penalties to fines only plus court costs, removing imprisonment or hard labor as an option for corporations.

• Repeals Section 13A-5-12.1 of the Alabama Code and makes the act effective immediately upon passage and gubernatorial approval.
