SB311 Summary

• Amends Section 12-11-30 of the Alabama Code to authorize circuit courts to punish contempt of court for violations of child support payment orders by imposing fines up to $100, imprisonment up to 5 days, or both for first offenses.

• For subsequent offenses of failing to pay child support, circuit courts may impose fines up to $100, imprisonment up to 15 days, or both.

• Extends the contempt punishment provisions for child support violations to apply in district courts and juvenile courts as well.

• Preserves the circuit court's existing power to enforce orders and judgments through civil contempt determinations.

• Became effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor on May 25, 2011 (passed 25-2 in the Senate).
