AL SB40

Amends Section 12-16-63 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to allow prospective jurors age 65 and older to request excusal from jury service by written statement to the court.

Permits senior jurors to request excusal either temporarily or permanently, with judges required to grant the excusal upon receipt of the written request.

Maintains existing provisions allowing excusal from jury service for undue or extreme physical or financial hardship, mental or physical incapacity, or public necessity for up to 24 months.

Clarifies that absence from employment alone does not constitute undue or extreme hardship for jury excusal purposes.

Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
