SB90 Summary

• Amends Sections 14-6-1 and 36-22-3 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to extend sovereign immunity protections to persons employed by sheriffs when acting under the sheriff's direction and supervision.

• Employees hired by sheriffs to operate jails and supervise inmates are entitled to the same immunities and legal protections granted to the sheriff under Alabama state law and the Alabama Constitution of 1901, provided they act within the scope of their duties and in compliance with law.

• Allows sheriff duties to be performed by deputies, reserve deputies, and authorized employees, who receive the same immunities as the sheriff when acting under the sheriff's direction and supervision and within the scope of their duties.

• Clarifies that the immunity provisions do not prevent individuals or entities from recovering damages under uninsured motorist insurance coverage.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
