Mourns the death of Dr. R. Oneal "Smitty" Smitherman, who died on April 14, 2011, at age 73.

Recognizes Dr. Smitherman as Professor Emeritus at Auburn University's Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture, with research instrumental to successful farming practices for catfish, tilapia, redfish, snapper, salmon, shrimp, and other species.

Honors his contributions to Auburn University's Arboretum through collection of native azaleas from every Alabama county and his advocacy to change the state flower from the Camellia to the native Rhododendron Alabamense.

Survived by wife Patsy Linton Smitherman; daughters Shelly and Susan with spouses Mike Parks and Jason White; sister Patty Pruitt; and brother Marshall Smitherman.

Senate adopted resolution on May 4, 2011; House adopted on May 24, 2011, expressing deep sadness and offering highest tribute to his life and legacy.
