State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative on November 18, 2010, which is owned and coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The Common Core initiative states that the federal government was not involved in developing the standards, individual states can choose to adopt all or any of the standards, and states can withdraw at any time.

The Legislature is concerned that the U.S. Department of Education is funding development of national curriculum guidelines, materials, and assessments based on Common Core standards, effectively creating a national curriculum and testing system.

The Legislature encourages the State Board of Education to take all appropriate steps, including revoking adoption of Common Core standards if necessary, to maintain complete control over Alabama's academic standards, curriculum, instruction, and testing.
