Alabama Legislature mourns the death of former Assistant Attorney General Carol Jean Smith of Montgomery and Anniston, who died on March 20, 2011, at age 63.

Ms. Smith was born October 12, 1947, graduated from Jacksonville State University and University of Alabama School of Law, and was named Jacksonville State University Alumna of the Year.

Ms. Smith served over 30 years in public service under eight Attorneys General, providing legal counsel to state officers in executive, legislative, and judicial branches and was recognized as the State's leading expert in municipal and county government law.

Survivors include her sister Claudette Smith and brother-in-law Jim Hanson, as well as numerous friends throughout Alabama who benefited from her counsel on government matters.

The Legislature recognizes and honors Ms. Smith's illustrious career as a lawyer and public servant dedicated to protecting Alabama's interests.
