Alabama currently has one of the highest infant mortality rates and premature birth rates in the country.

Medicaid requires prior approval before covering certain prescription drugs and services necessary for premature infants born under 37 weeks of gestation.

The prior approval requirement creates undue hardship and may delay life-saving medical care for premature infants after hospital release.

Legislature urges the Alabama Medicaid Agency to remove or alter the administrative prior approval process for premature infants through the first 12 months of life.

A copy of the resolution shall be provided to Dr. Bob Mullins, Director of the Alabama Medicaid Agency.
