HB345 Summary

• Requires health benefit plans to provide coverage for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder for insured individuals 18 years of age or under, effective October 1, 2012.

• Coverage includes evidence-based care such as behavioral health treatment, pharmacy care, psychiatric care, psychological care, and therapeutic care as prescribed by a licensed physician or psychologist.

• Limits behavioral therapy coverage to a maximum of $50,000 per year, adjusted annually beginning one year after enactment based on Medical Care Component of Consumer Price Index.

• Prohibits health benefit plans from denying coverage, refusing contracts, or terminating coverage solely because an individual is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

• Amends Sections 10A-20-6.16 and 27-21A-23 to make autism spectrum disorder treatment coverage requirements applicable to health care service plans and health maintenance organizations.
