HB479 Summary

• Amends Section 36-27-49.3 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to allow circuit judges and district judges in the Judicial Retirement Fund to purchase credit for up to four years of active full-time military service.

• Extends eligibility to circuit and district judges who meet minimum vesting requirements, have honorable military discharge, and have not received prior credit for that service in any other public pension fund.

• Requires eligible members to pay the full actuarially determined cost for each year of service credit before their retirement date in order to claim the military service credit.

• Maintains existing limitations requiring that military service be active full-time duty in U.S. armed forces, excluding reserve or National Guard weekend and summer service.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
