HB50 Summary

• Amends Section 22-11E-2 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to require youth athletes removed from practice or games due to suspected concussion or brain injury to be withheld from participation for seven days from the date of removal.

• Youth athletes may not return to play until both seven days have elapsed since removal and they receive written clearance from a licensed physician.

• Requires sports and recreational organization governing bodies to develop guidelines and concussion information sheets that must be signed by youth athletes and parents or guardians annually before practice or competition begins.

• Mandates that coaches receive annual training to recognize concussion symptoms and seek proper medical treatment for suspected concussions.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
