HB6 Summary

• Amends Section 16-28-3 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to decrease the mandatory minimum school attendance age from seven years old to six years old.

• Children between ages six and 17 are required to attend public school, private school, church school, or receive instruction from a competent private tutor for the entire school term, with exceptions for church school attendance prior to age 16.

• School admission is on an individual basis by application of parents, legal custodian, or guardian to the local board of education at the beginning of each school year under board-prescribed rules and regulations.

• Bill is excluded from Amendment 621 constitutional requirements regarding local fund expenditures because expenses are limited to school board operations only.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
