• Grants civil immunity to medical residents (graduates of medical school in residency training programs) at academic medical centers of the University of South Alabama or University of Alabama Board of Trustees for damages arising from actions or recommendations made within the scope of their residency duties.

• Defines medical residents as physicians in graduate medical education programs including interns, residents, and fellows, and requires participation in classroom education and supervised clinical training.

• Excludes from immunity any damages caused by willful, wanton, or intentional acts or omissions.

• Excludes from immunity any damages caused by medical care provided outside the course and scope of the resident's training and educational program.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval, and applies only to causes of action accruing on or after May 1, 2012.
