HB76 Summary

• Amends Alabama's Move Over Act to include utility service vehicles operated by or on behalf of entities providing utility services in the types of vehicles requiring other drivers to move over or slow down.

• Requires drivers on interstate highways or multi-lane roads to vacate the lane closest to a utility service vehicle displaying rotating lights, flashing lights, or other visual signals, or slow down by at least 15 mph below the posted speed limit if unsafe to move over.

• Requires drivers on two-lane roads to move as far away as possible within their lane from the utility service vehicle and reduce speed by 15 mph below the posted limit (or travel at 10 mph if posted limit is 20 mph or less).

• Establishes penalties as misdemeanors: $25 fine for first violation, $50 for second violation, and $100 for third or subsequent violations.

• Directs the Department of Public Safety to conduct an educational awareness campaign and include information about the law in newly printed driver's license materials.
