Dr. John Maloy Long is commended for a distinguished fifty-year teaching career as band director at Blount County High School, Fort Payne High School, Robert E. Lee High School of Montgomery, and Troy State University.

Dr. Long founded and conducted the Southeast Alabama Community Band, which has presented over fifty free public concerts annually for the past twelve seasons in Troy, Montgomery, Tallassee, Elba, Opelika, and Monroeville.

Dr. Long received the 2012 Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in March and was named an Honorary Life Member of the American Bandmasters Association in February.

The band performs traditional concert works including marches, orchestral transcriptions, original compositions, patriotic and sacred works, and jazz selections without charging admission or providing member compensation.

The House of Representatives honors Dr. Long and the Southeast Alabama Community Band for their life-long service and cultural contributions to Alabama.
