SB13 Summary

• Amends Section 31-5-14 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to change payment of Department of Veterans' Affairs salaries and expenses from mandatory ("require") to discretionary ("authorize") from the State General Fund, effective for fiscal years beginning October 1, 2012 and thereafter.

• Allows the state to pay salaries of officials and employees, office expenses, travel costs, and operational expenses for the department, district service commissioners' offices, and county service commissioners' offices from the State General Fund at its discretion.

• Requires each county with a district or county service commissioner's office to provide suitable office space in the county courthouse or another county location and cover all rental, telephone, utility, janitorial, and maintenance expenses for that office.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
