SB133 Summary

• Amends Section 17-8-1 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to authorize the appointment of alternate election officials to serve when appointed inspectors or clerks are unable to perform their duties.

• Establishes population-based limits on alternate election officials: up to 4 alternates in counties with populations under 100,000; up to 12 alternates in counties with 100,000 to 250,000 inhabitants; and up to 24 alternates in counties exceeding 250,000 inhabitants.

• Prioritizes appointment of alternates who are registered voters at the precinct where a vacancy exists.

• Designates alternate election official appointments and payments as state-reimbursable election expenses through the state Comptroller.

• Became effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor on March 14, 2012.
