SB 202 Summary

• Establishes the Teacher and Education Employee Protection Act to provide professional liability insurance coverage for teachers, educational support personnel, and student teachers in Alabama public schools.

• Requires the State Department of Education and Department of Finance to purchase or provide education employee professional liability insurance covering certificated personnel, support personnel employed by local boards of education, and student teachers at no cost to covered individuals.

• Insurance coverage shall protect against damages arising from the performance of duties and shall be funded through specific appropriations included in the annual Education Trust Fund Appropriations Act, with unused appropriations reverting to the Education Trust Fund.

• Automatically covers all full-time certificated and support personnel employed by local boards of education and assigned student teachers, with optional coverage available at cost for part-time employees.

• Program must become effective for insurance coverage no later than July 1, 2013, with joint administration and rule-making authority granted to the State Department of Education and Department of Finance.
