Removes the requirement that licensed physical therapists practice only upon referral from a physician or dentist, allowing independent practice by licensed physical therapists.

Amends Sections 34-24-191 and 34-24-217 of the Alabama Code to strike language restricting physical therapy practice to physician or dentist referrals.

Physical therapist assistants continue to require direction from a registered physical therapist.

Protects physical therapists employed by or contracted with physicians from disciplinary action based solely on those employment relationships or on providing therapy pursuant to physician referrals.

Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
