SB262 Summary

• Creates the Alabama Interagency Council for the Prevention of Elder Abuse with membership including chief executive officers from 26+ state agencies, organizations, and associations focused on elder services and law enforcement.

• Defines elder abuse for individuals age 60 and above to include emotional/psychological abuse, material exploitation, neglect, physical abuse, self-neglect, and sexual abuse.

• Designates the Department of Senior Services as the lead agency with its Commissioner serving as council chair; requires bi-monthly public meetings and establishes conflict-of-interest voting restrictions.

• Mandates the council develop a comprehensive statewide system of care plan reviewed semi-annually and report progress to the Governor and Legislature by the 10th legislative day of each regular session.

• Subjects the council to Alabama Sunset Law with a termination date of October 1, 2015, and every four years thereafter unless continued; becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval.
