SB323 Summary

• Amends Section 30-3-194 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to repeal the requirement for applicants to provide their Social Security number for license renewal.

• Removes "or renewal" language from the statute, so Social Security numbers are required only for initial issuance of licenses, certificates, permits, or authorizations for motor vehicles and professional/occupational activities.

• Retains Social Security number requirements for divorce decrees, support orders, paternity determinations, marriage licenses, death certificates, and child support program administration.

• Addresses identity theft risks associated with online license renewal systems that previously required applicants to submit Social Security numbers over the internet.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
