SB377 - Sheriff Qualifications Summary

• Establish seven minimum qualifications for persons seeking election or appointment as sheriff in Alabama, in addition to any other legally required qualifications.

• Require candidates to be a U.S. citizen with at least one year residency in the county and three years residency in Alabama immediately prior to qualification.

• Mandate candidates be at least 25 years old, possess voter registration in the county for at least one year prior to qualifying, and have a high school diploma or GED equivalence.

• Require candidates to have either three or more years of prior service as a law enforcement officer with arrest power, or a degree in criminal justice from an accredited institution of higher education.

• Prohibit candidates from having ever been convicted of a felony.
