SB42 Summary

• Amends Section 36-29-14 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to add United Ways of Alabama and its member United Ways to the list of entities eligible to participate in state health insurance coverage.

• Eligible organizations may elect to have their officers, members, employees, and retired employees receive health insurance coverage through the State Employees' Insurance Board without creating liability to the state or the State Employees' Health Insurance Plan.

• Participation is optional with the State Employees' Insurance Board, and participating entities must adopt a resolution conforming to board rules and remit required premiums through their chief fiscal officer.

• Employers may withdraw from participation by providing written notice and resolution to the State Employees' Insurance Board at least six months prior to the effective withdrawal date and remain liable for unpaid claims with interest accruing at 1.5% per month.

• The act becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor or upon becoming law through other means.
