SB547 Summary

• Amends Alabama's G.I. Dependents' Scholarship program to specify which dependents are entitled to benefits under Sections 31-6-2, 31-6-4, 31-6-5, 31-6-6, 31-6-7, and 31-6-15 of the Code of Alabama 1975.

• Limits educational benefits to tuition only (excluding fees and books) for dependents who apply for and first receive benefits after August 1, 2012.

• Applies the tuition-only limitation to children of deceased or disabled veterans, spouses/widows/widowers of deceased or disabled veterans, and dependents of veterans with 20-90 percent service-connected disability.

• Restricts benefit eligibility beginning August 1, 2012 to immediate children of the veteran living at the time of the veteran's service or the veteran's spouse at the time of service, and terminates benefits upon divorce.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and gubernatorial approval.
