SB548 Summary

• Requires the State Department of Education to establish the Alabama Virtual Instruction Program commencing with the 2012 school year to provide online and distance learning options to public school students in grades K-12.

• Program shall be modeled after a proven successful program in another state and provide both part-time and full-time virtual instruction options through an interactive learning environment.

• Requires city and county school districts to establish participation parameters, provide customized programs addressing local student needs, and allow students to continue participating in extracurricular activities at their zoned school.

• Program must include provisions for approved provider qualifications, multi-district contractual agreements, reporting requirements, student eligibility and participation requirements, Foundation Program funding, and compliance with statewide assessment and accountability standards.

• Act becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
