SB9 Summary

• Amends Section 25-5-50 of the Alabama Code to authorize the Commissioner of Insurance to regulate workers' compensation rates for volunteer fire departments and rescue squads.

• Sets the maximum annual payroll per fire fighter or rescue squad member at $300 per year for the purpose of calculating workers' compensation insurance rates.

• Provides voluntary workers' compensation coverage for certified volunteer fire departments and legally organized rescue squads that meet minimum personnel and equipment standards established by the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads.

• Establishes that wages for injured volunteer fire fighters or rescue squad members shall be calculated at 66 2/3 percent of their regular employment wages or 66 2/3 percent of minimum wage, whichever is greater.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor or upon otherwise becoming law.
