HB127 Summary

• Amends Section 36-30-1 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to expand the definition of "firefighter" to include firefighters employed by the State of Alabama or any of its agencies.

• Extends $100,000 death benefit eligibility to beneficiaries and dependents of state-employed firefighters who are killed in the line of duty, die from injuries received in the line of duty, or die from heart attack or stroke under certain duty-related conditions.

• Previously, the $100,000 compensation benefit was limited to firefighters employed by cities, towns, counties, and public corporations providing fire protection services, excluding state employees.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
