HB292 Summary - Colonel Mike Sullivan Act

• Amends Alabama Code sections governing the State Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists to add definitions and regulatory authority for therapeutic shoe fitters and orthotic fitters as licensed health care professionals.

• Defines therapeutic shoe fitter as a licensed professional educated and trained to provide non-custom therapeutic shoes and non-custom multi-density inserts, including patient assessment, treatment planning, implementation, follow-up, and practice management.

• Changes orthotic supplier designation from "registered" to "licensed" status and establishes licensing requirements for orthotic suppliers requiring citizenship or legal presence in the United States and attestation of employment with orthosis manufacturers.

• Requires all accredited facilities for prosthetic, orthotic, and pedorthic care to meet standards of nationally recognized certifying boards accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and establishes that therapeutic shoe fitters must be physically present with patients when providing services.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
