HB32 Summary

• Active and contributing members of the Employees' Retirement System of Alabama may purchase up to two years of service credit for time spent receiving workers' compensation benefits due to a work-related injury.

• Members are eligible only if they returned to work with their covered employer within one year after their workers' compensation benefits ended.

• Members must pay a lump sum equal to the full actuarially required cost for each year of service credit purchased, as determined by the system's actuary, within two years from the end of the disability period.

• Members cannot receive credit for any period already credited in the retirement system or other retirement plans, except federal Social Security.

• The Board of Control of the Employees' Retirement System shall adopt rules and regulations for administering the program, including verification of claimed service.
