HB36 Summary

• Amends Section 34-23-74 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to authorize the Board of Pharmacy to adopt rules permitting automated dispensing systems in skilled nursing facilities.

• Allows pharmacies holding a permit for that purpose to operate and use automated dispensing systems in skilled nursing facilities, notwithstanding other provisions of existing law.

• Maintains existing requirements that all institutional pharmacies be under supervision of a licensed pharmacist and that vending machines or mechanical devices be stocked only under pharmacist supervision.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.

• Passed by the House on February 26, 2013 and by the Senate on April 16, 2013.
