SB20 Summary

• Amends Section 13A-6-4 to make criminally negligent homicide a Class C felony when caused by any vehicle operator driving or operating unlawfully under the influence of alcohol or drugs, expanding the offense beyond motor vehicles to include vessels and other propelled devices.

• Amends Section 13A-6-20 to make assault in the first degree apply when a person causes serious physical injury while driving or operating any vehicle unlawfully under the influence of alcohol or drugs, eliminating the previous limitation to motor vehicles only.

• Changes existing language to clarify the offenses apply to operators of "any vehicle" rather than "motor vehicle," broadening applicability to include vessels and marine devices under existing Alabama Criminal Code definitions.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
