SB312 Summary

• Applies only to Baldwin County and establishes minimum qualifications for persons elected or appointed as sheriff, including U.S. citizenship, one-year county residency, voter registration, high school diploma or GED, age 25 or older, and three or more years of prior law enforcement experience with arrest powers.

• Requires sheriff candidates to have never been convicted of a felony.

• Mandates that elected sheriffs complete a minimum of 12 hours of annual executive level continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriff's Association or National Sheriff's Association, with certification filed to the judge of probate by December 31.

• Does not apply to supernumerary sheriffs.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and gubernatorial approval.
