SB333 Summary

• Amends Section 34-19-8 of the Alabama Code to allow childbirth to be planned in a hospital, birthing center, or a location chosen by the pregnant woman, replacing the previous requirement that all deliveries be planned in hospitals.

• Permits pregnant women to choose between physician delivery or delivery by a nurse midwife under Chapter 19 of Title 34.

• Provides immunity from lawsuits and legal proceedings for physicians, nurses, midwives, and other health care providers who, in good faith, participate in or advise on a pregnant woman's choice of childbirth location and method.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or when otherwise becoming law.
