Local boards of education may employ school security personnel or contract with law enforcement agencies to employ school resource officers authorized to carry firearms while on duty.

Employees authorized to carry firearms must be certified law enforcement officers in good standing, complete active shooter training approved by the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency, and pass annual firearm requalification.

Authorized school security personnel and resource officers must carry a non-lethal weapon and receive training in its appropriate use.

Amends Section 13A-11-72 to exempt qualified school security personnel and school resource officers employed and authorized by local boards of education from prohibitions on carrying deadly weapons on school premises.

The State Department of Education shall promulgate rules for implementation, including additional employment qualifications for school security personnel and resource officers.
