SB402 Summary

• Authorizes the State Fire Marshal to issue permits directly to certified potable water single family dwelling fire protection sprinkler contractors, in addition to existing permit authority for general fire protection sprinkler contractors.

• Requires potable water single family dwelling fire sprinkler contractors to be licensed Master Plumbers in Alabama and pass a competency test administered by the State Fire Marshal's Office, with a $100 nonrefundable application fee.

• Requires general fire protection sprinkler contractors to have certificate holders who pass the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) Fire Protection Layout Technician - Level III competency test, with a $100 application fee.

• Creates the Fire Protection and Sprinkler System Advisory Board with five members: representatives from Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama, Alabama Fire Sprinklers Association, the State Fire Marshal, a local building official appointed by the Governor, and an at-large member appointed by the Senate President Pro Tempore; board meets at least twice yearly.

• Clarifies that nothing in the act authorizes the State Fire Marshal to require installation of fire protection sprinkler systems in single-family dwellings.
