SB84 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code sections 31-6-2, 31-6-4, 31-6-5, 31-6-6, and 31-6-15 to modify veterans' educational benefits for dependents.

• Limits educational benefits to undergraduate courses only for dependents (children, spouses, and unmarried widows/widowers) who apply for and first receive benefits after January 1, 2014.

• Maintains existing eligibility criteria based on veteran status (killed in action, service-connected disability, 100 percent permanent disability rating, or 20 percent or more disability rating).

• Redefines certain terms including "husband" and "wife" to mean "spouse" for purposes of benefit eligibility.

• Limits Education Trust Fund reimbursements to institutions for benefits provided to state residents who apply for benefits for the first time after January 1, 2014.
