SJR13 - Alabama Bicentennial Commission

• Creates the Alabama Bicentennial Commission to plan and commemorate the state's 200th anniversary of statehood in 2019, recognizing that 44 delegates drafted Alabama's first constitution in Huntsville in summer 1819.

• Commission membership includes 8 appointed members (2 each from Governor, Lieutenant Governor, President Pro Tempore, and Speaker) plus 4 ex-officio directors from the Tourism Department, Department of Archives and History, Alabama Constitution Village, and State Black Archives Center.

• Commission responsibilities include planning bicentennial activities, encouraging private and local government participation, serving as an information clearinghouse, coordinating with federal and other state commissions, and adopting rules for bicentennial logos and symbols.

• Commission must submit annual reports to state leadership by 30 days before each legislative session from 2014 through 2019, detailing commemoration plans and recommendations.

• Commission terminates on April 30, 2020; members serve without compensation but receive expense reimbursement; initial meeting required no later than September 1, 2013.
