HB385 Summary

• Authorizes the State Fire Marshal to issue permits to potable water single family dwelling fire protection sprinkler contractors, establishing a new category of certified contractor separate from general fire protection sprinkler contractors.

• Requires potable water single family dwelling fire protection sprinkler contractors to be licensed Master Plumbers in Alabama and pass a competency test administered by the State Fire Marshal's Office on NFPA 13D installation standards.

• Requires general fire protection sprinkler contractors to pass the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) Fire Protection Layout Technician Level III competency test.

• Sets a $100 nonrefundable application fee for both categories of contractors and requires the State Fire Marshal to issue permits within 30 days of receiving a properly completed application and fee.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
