HB461 Summary

• Establishes distinctive motor vehicle license plates for paid professional firefighters employed by city, town, county, or other state subdivisions, including chiefs, captains, and firefighting personnel.

• Plates shall be designed by the state association of professional firefighters in coordination with Alabama Department of Revenue and issued through county probate judges or license commissioners upon payment of regular license fees.

• Firefighters' Personnel Standards and Education Commission must submit annual lists of eligible firefighters to county officials by December 1 each year; late applicants may obtain plates by presenting department chief certification.

• Distinctive plates apply only to personally owned private passenger vehicles, station wagons, pick-up trucks, and motorcycles registered to the firefighter applicant.

• Establishes a Class C misdemeanor penalty for anyone who falsely obtains or certifies an individual to obtain a professional firefighter license plate; amends sections 32-6-250 and 32-6-251 to provide free distinctive plates for Legion of Valor members with proof of Medal of Honor or military service crosses.

• Effective date: first day of the third month following passage and governor approval.
