HB553 Summary

• Authorizes law enforcement officers to make warrantless arrests for trespass, assault in the third degree, or harassment committed on the premises of an educational institution based on reasonable cause.

• Expands the definition of "building" under Alabama Code Section 13A-7-1 to include any structure used for any purpose by an educational institution.

• Defines "educational institution" to include public or private colleges, universities, graduate schools, professional schools, junior colleges, trade schools, elementary schools, secondary schools, and institutions for education and training of the deaf, blind, or individuals with developmental disabilities.

• Adds a new subsection (9) to Section 15-10-3 establishing the warrantless arrest authority for the specified crimes on educational institution premises.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
