HB74 Summary

• Amends Section 16-22-1 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to add Faulkner University to the list of educational institutions whose presidents or chief executive officers may appoint police officers.

• Authorizes appointed police officers to keep off intruders and prevent trespass upon and damage to the property of the educational institution, with all duties and powers of police officers.

• Requires all appointed police officers on duty to carry and be trained in the proper use of a nonlethal weapon designed to immediately incapacitate a targeted person while minimizing fatalities and permanent injury.

• Restricts police officers appointed by Miles College to operate only on the campus and property of Miles College.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
