HB80 Summary

• Creates an additional circuit judgeship, designated Circuit Judgeship Number 7, in the Sixth Judicial Circuit comprised of Tuscaloosa County.

• Makes the judgeship conditional upon Tuscaloosa County Commission adopting a resolution to fund compensation and benefits for the judge, a judicial assistant, and a court reporter for the first 24 months.

• Provides for election of the judge at the November 2016 general election, contingent on preclearance under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and county commission adoption of the funding resolution.

• Establishes a six-year term for the first elected judge, with office beginning the first Monday following the second Tuesday in January after election.

• New judge shall have all jurisdiction, power, qualifications, and duties of other circuit judges and receive compensation under Chapter 10A of Title 12, Code of Alabama 1975, with no salary supplement or expense allowance if first elected after October 1, 2001.
