Recognizes Maria Gitin, a 19-year-old San Francisco State College freshman in 1965, for volunteering with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's SCOPE Project, a voter education and registration drive in the Deep South.

Honors Gitin's work in Wilcox County, Alabama with SCLC leaders Dan Harrell and Major Johns to support African American voting rights.

Acknowledges Gitin's authorship of "This Bright Light of Ours: Stories from the Voting Rights Fight," published by University of Alabama Press, which documents the experiences of civil rights workers and grassroots activists in the Alabama Black Belt.

Commends Gitin's continued service as a national speaker, cultural diversity trainer, and voting rights advocate, and her contributions to organizations benefiting Wilcox County.

House of Representatives thanks Gitin and all Civil Rights Movement veterans and Freedom Fighters who helped communities exercise their constitutional rights to vote and peacefully assemble.
