Honors Dr. Ben Johnson, the first president of Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, appointed in 1965 by the Alabama State Board of Education.

Dr. Johnson served as president from 1964 to 1971, growing enrollment from 59 students at inception to 295 by his departure, and developed curriculum standards for technical programs statewide.

Before his educational career, Dr. Johnson joined the Navy at age 17 and earned a Bronze Star and meritorious service ribbons for service in six World War II invasions including Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Midway Islands.

After leaving Wallace State, Dr. Johnson earned his doctorate at Auburn University and served as administrator at Ayers State Technical College and Gadsden State Community College; later purchased and served as editor and publisher of The Cullman Tribune.

Dr. Johnson's legacy continued through his family, including his wife Ruby Johnson who taught English at Wallace State for over 30 years, daughter Dr. Mell Johnson who taught English there, and son John Johnson who served as president of Alabama Southern Community College.
