Commends Officer Demarcus Mitchell of the Birmingham Police Department as a nominee for the 2014 Alabama Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement, Alabama's highest law enforcement award for extraordinary courage.

Officer Mitchell has served with the Birmingham Police Department for five years and is assigned to the North Precinct.

On December 1, 2013, while traveling on I-59 at the I-65 interchange, Officer Mitchell observed a male pedestrian positioned in the roadway threatening to be struck by traffic, called for backup units, and directed units to block I-65 traffic below.

Officer Mitchell exited his vehicle to talk with the man, who then went to the bridge railing and stepped over threatening to jump; Officer Mitchell grabbed and secured the man over the railing while three backup officers assisted in bringing them both to safety.

The House of Representatives recognizes Officer Mitchell for his quick and selfless actions that saved the citizen's life and directs that he receive a copy of the resolution as evidence of the legislature's admiration and esteem.
